Why Naked Chicken Tenders Are A Must-Try: Healthy, Crispy & Delicious

These chicken tenders stand out for several compelling reasons. First and foremost, they are **inherently healthy**. Unlike traditional deep-fried tenders laden with excess oil and heavy batter, our naked version sidesteps these issues entirely. By opting for air frying or oven baking, you eliminate the greasy mess and unnecessary calories, making these tenders a fantastic choice for anyone looking to eat well without sacrificing flavor.

The magic lies in our carefully crafted seasoning blend and a clever use of cornstarch. This combination ensures that every bite is **bursting with flavor** and boasts a **beautifully crisp coating** – without a thick, calorie-adding batter. The subtle crunch from the cornstarch mimics the satisfying texture of fried chicken, but in a much lighter, more wholesome package.

Preparation is a breeze. With an air fryer, you’re looking at under 20 minutes from start to finish, and the oven method is just as straightforward. This makes them an ideal solution for busy weeknights when you need a quick yet satisfying meal that the whole family will adore. My husband, for instance, counts these among his favorite speedy dinners! If you do find yourself craving a lightly battered tender, be sure to check out my boneless chicken wings recipe, but for a truly light and flavorful experience, these naked tenders are unmatched.

Moreover, their versatility is incredible. These **crispy chicken tenders** pair wonderfully with a wide array of sides, from a fresh salad to heartier options like my Spicy Mac & Cheese. They’re not just a meal; they’re a foundation for countless delicious possibilities.

Essential Ingredients for Flavorful Tenders

Crafting the perfect Naked Chicken Tenders starts with a few simple, high-quality ingredients. Each component plays a crucial role in achieving that desirable texture and unforgettable flavor profile.

Ingredients needed to make Naked Chicken Tenders, displayed on small plates for clarity.
The simple yet powerful ingredients that create these healthy and delicious chicken tenders.
  • Chicken Breast: The foundation of our dish. While you can use pre-cut chicken tenderloins, opting for full chicken breasts allows you to control the size and thickness of your tenders. Always remember to **pat the chicken dry thoroughly** with a paper towel before applying any seasoning. This crucial step helps the seasoning blend adhere better to the chicken and contributes significantly to achieving a crispy exterior. For best results, choose fresh, high-quality chicken breast from your preferred brand.
  • Corn Starch: This is our secret weapon for creating a crispy, “batter-like” texture without the need for a heavy, greasy batter. A light dusting of corn starch forms a thin, almost invisible coating that crisps up beautifully during cooking, giving you that satisfying crunch that makes these tenders so appealing. It’s the key to achieving truly **crispy air fryer chicken tenders** or **crispy oven baked chicken tenders**.
  • Seasoning Blend: The heart of the flavor! Our unique blend elevates plain chicken into something extraordinary.
    • Onion Powder & Garlic Powder: These provide a foundational aromatic depth, enhancing the natural savory notes of the chicken.
    • Salt & White Pepper: Essential for seasoning, bringing out all the other flavors. White pepper offers a subtle heat and distinctive aroma without visible black specks. Adjust salt based on your preference and if using salty seasoning mixes.
    • Paprika: Adds a beautiful reddish hue and a mild, sweet, peppery flavor. It also contributes to the golden-brown crispness.
    • Cayenne Pepper (Optional): For those who enjoy a little kick! A touch of cayenne introduces a gentle warmth that complements the other spices without overpowering them. Feel free to adjust the amount or omit it entirely based on your spice tolerance.
    • Mustard Powder: A secret ingredient that adds a tangy, slightly pungent note, deepening the overall flavor profile and pairing exceptionally well with chicken.
    • Everything But the Bagel Seasoning: This is a fantastic optional addition that provides an extra layer of texture and savory goodness. The sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried garlic, and dried onion create a delightful “crunch” and an irresistible flavor that I absolutely adore. Be mindful of its salt content when adding extra salt to the blend.
  • Olive Oil: A small amount of olive oil helps bind the corn starch and seasoning to the chicken, ensuring an even coating. It also aids in achieving that desired golden-brown crispness during cooking.

Creative Recipe Variations and Substitutions

One of the best aspects of these Naked Chicken Tenders is how easily they can be adapted to suit your preferences or what you have on hand. Don’t be afraid to get creative!

  • Chicken Cuts: While chicken breasts are classic, you can absolutely use pre-cut **chicken tenderloins** for even quicker prep. For a slightly richer flavor and juicier texture, **chicken thighs** can also be used. Keep in mind that chicken thighs may cook a bit quicker and the texture will be slightly different, but equally delicious. Ensure to cut them into uniform, tender-sized pieces for even cooking.
  • Starch Alternatives: If cornstarch isn’t available or you have dietary restrictions, **arrowroot powder** or **tapioca starch** make excellent substitutes. They both provide a similar light, crispy coating effect.
  • Seasoning Swaps: The provided seasoning blend is a personal favorite, delivering an incredible depth of flavor. However, feel free to **customize it to your liking**.
    • Herbal Blends: For an Italian-inspired twist, try adding dried oregano, basil, and a pinch of rosemary.
    • Spicy Kick: Increase the cayenne or add a dash of chili powder for extra heat.
    • Lemon Pepper: A bright and zesty option, perfect for a lighter taste.
    • Smoky Flavor: Experiment with smoked paprika for a deeper, more robust profile.

If you don’t have one or two spices on hand, don’t let that stop you! The core blend is quite forgiving. And as mentioned, the Everything But The Bagel Seasoning truly adds a unique “crunch” that makes these tenders extra special.

  • Dunking Sauces: While the tenders are fantastic on their own, a great dipping sauce elevates the experience. Beyond the usual BBQ, ketchup, and ranch, consider whipping up a batch of my Spicy Honey Mustard for an unbeatable pairing. For an elevated, gourmet touch, my Creamy Pesto Dressing offers a fresh, herbaceous complement that transforms these into an exceptional meal. Other delicious options include sriracha mayo, garlic aioli, or a simple lemon-herb vinaigrette.

Step-by-Step Guide: How To Make The Perfect Tenders

Making these **healthy chicken tenders** is incredibly straightforward. Follow these steps for perfectly crispy and flavorful results every time, whether you’re using an air fryer or an oven.

Steps to make Naked Chicken Tenders, showing chicken pieces being seasoned in a clear bowl.
Chicken tenders being seasoned in a bowl, ensuring every piece is evenly coated for maximum flavor and crispiness.
  1. Prepare the Chicken: Begin by thoroughly patting your chicken breasts dry with paper towels. This step is crucial for achieving that desirable crisp exterior, as moisture can prevent the seasoning from adhering properly and inhibit browning. Next, cut the chicken into tender-sized pieces. Aim for uniform pieces, typically around 2 inches in length and width, to ensure even cooking. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the cornstarch and all your chosen seasonings (onion powder, garlic powder, salt, white pepper, paprika, cayenne, mustard powder, and Everything But The Bagel Seasoning if using). Whisk them together well to create a uniform seasoning blend.
  2. Coat the Chicken: Add the olive oil and the cut chicken pieces to the bowl with the seasoning blend. Mix everything really well, either with your hands (wearing gloves is recommended) or a spatula, ensuring that every single piece of chicken is evenly coated. A thorough coating guarantees maximum flavor and crispiness.
  3. Naked Chicken Tenders arranged in a single layer on an air fryer tray, ready for cooking.
Chicken tenders neatly arranged in the air fryer basket, ensuring no overlap for optimal airflow and crispiness.
  4. Cook to Perfection (Air Fryer or Oven):
    • For the Air Fryer: For easier cleanup and to prevent sticking, you can place a small piece of parchment paper in the air fryer basket (optional). Lightly spritz the air fryer tray or parchment paper with cooking spray. Arrange the chicken tenders in a single layer across the tray, ensuring they **do not overlap**. Overlapping will steam the chicken instead of crisping it. Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for approximately 13-14 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Flip them halfway through for even browning and crispiness.
    • For the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Arrange the seasoned chicken tenders in a single layer on the prepared sheet, again making sure they do not overlap. Bake for about 10 minutes, then flip the tenders and continue baking for another 5-6 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). The oven method yields tenders with a slightly softer exterior compared to the air fryer, but they are still wonderfully flavorful.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Once cooked, let the Naked Chicken Tenders cool for just a couple of minutes – they’ll be very hot! Then, serve them immediately with your favorite dipping sauce. Classic choices like BBQ sauce, ketchup, honey mustard, or ranch are always a hit. For an elevated culinary experience, I highly recommend serving them with my Creamy Pesto Dressing. It’s a fantastic way to transform a simple meal into something truly special!

Expert Tips and FAQs for Success

To ensure your Naked Chicken Tenders turn out perfect every time, keep these expert tips in mind and get answers to common questions:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I use chicken thighs instead of breasts?
Yes, absolutely! Chicken thighs are a great alternative if you prefer a juicier, slightly richer flavor. They will have a slightly different texture and might cook a bit quicker than chicken breasts, so keep an eye on the internal temperature.
I don’t have an air fryer; will this recipe still work?
Definitely! This recipe is designed to work beautifully in both the air fryer and a conventional oven. While the air fryer tends to give the crispiest results due to better air circulation, the oven method still produces wonderfully flavorful tenders with a slightly softer exterior. We’ve included instructions for both methods.
How do I know when the chicken is fully cooked?
The most accurate way to check for doneness is to use an instant-read meat thermometer. Insert it into the thickest part of a tender; it should read 165°F (74°C). The cooking times provided are estimates, and actual times may vary based on your appliance and the thickness of your chicken pieces.

Recipe Tips for the Crispiest, Most Flavorful Tenders

  • Don’t Overcook: This is perhaps the most important tip! Overcooked chicken becomes dry and tough. Use a meat thermometer to ensure the chicken reaches exactly 165°F (74°C) and then remove it promptly from the heat. All chickens vary in size and thickness, so checking at the recommended times is key.
  • Pat Dry, Always: We can’t stress this enough. Excess moisture on the chicken surface prevents the cornstarch and seasoning from adhering properly and inhibits the browning and crisping process. A dry surface is crucial for a perfectly crispy exterior.
  • Avoid Overcrowding: Whether you’re using an air fryer or an oven, arrange the chicken tenders in a single layer with space between each piece. Overcrowding traps moisture and leads to steaming rather than crisping, resulting in soggy tenders. Cook in batches if necessary.
  • Preheat Your Appliance: Always preheat your air fryer or oven to the specified temperature. Starting with a hot cooking environment ensures the tenders begin cooking immediately and helps achieve that desired crispy crust.
  • Even Coating is Key: Take your time to ensure every piece of chicken is thoroughly and evenly coated with the cornstarch and seasoning blend. This guarantees consistent flavor and crispiness throughout.
  • Storage and Reheating Leftovers: Leftover Naked Chicken Tenders can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. For the best texture when reheating, avoid the microwave. Instead, reheat them in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3-5 minutes, or in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for 5-7 minutes, until heated through and crispy again.
  • Freezing for Later: These tenders freeze wonderfully! You can freeze them raw (after coating) or cooked.
    • Raw: Arrange coated tenders in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze until solid. Transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before cooking.
    • Cooked: Allow cooked tenders to cool completely, then freeze them in a single layer before transferring to a freezer-safe container. Reheat from frozen in the air fryer (approx. 8-10 mins at 350°F) or oven (approx. 15-20 mins at 375°F).
  • Adjust Cayenne to Taste: If you are sensitive to heat or making these for children, feel free to reduce or completely skip the cayenne pepper in the seasoning blend.
  • Alternative Oils: If olive oil isn’t your preference, avocado oil is another excellent choice for this recipe, offering a neutral flavor and high smoke point.

Serving Suggestions: What To Pair With Your Tenders

Go all out and serve them alongside my creamy and flavorful Spicy Mac & Cheese. Other great options include mashed potatoes, sweet potato fries, or a simple side of roasted vegetables like broccoli or asparagus.

  • Grain Bowls: Create a balanced and filling grain bowl by combining your crispy tenders with quinoa or brown rice, roasted vegetables, and a flavorful dressing.

Naked Chicken Tenders

By Bailey Rhatigan

Naked Chicken Tenders made in the air fryer or the oven. These tenders are EASY to make, healthy and addictively good. Whip them up in about 20 minutes.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 18 minutes

Servings: 2

Equipment

  • Air Fryer (or oven)

Ingredients

  • 1-1½ lb chicken breast, *see notes
  • 1½ Tbsp corn starch, optional – but this helps create a crispy coating
  • ½ tsp salt, *less if using a salty “everything but the bagel mix”*
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper, optional
  • ½ tsp mustard powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp white pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1-2 tsp Everything But The Bagel Seasoning, Optional *use less if it’s a salty version of the mix
  • ½ tbs olive oil, more as needed

Instructions

  1. Pat chicken dry with a paper towel. Cut into tender sized pieces, about 2 inches in length and width typically. In a medium bowl add cornstarch and seasoning, whisk well.
  2. Add oil and chicken breasts to the bowl and mix really well so the chicken breasts are evenly coated.
  3. Place a small piece of parchment paper in the air fryer (optional). Spritz the air fryer tray or parchment with spray, lay the chicken tenders flat across the tray. Don’t overlap the chicken tenders. Air fry on 350ºF (175°C) for about 13-14 minutes or until the chicken is 165ºF (74°C) internally.

*For the oven, place parchment on a cookie sheet and lay tenders flat. Bake on 375ºF (190°C) for about 10 minutes, turn the tenders and bake on the other side for another 5-6 minutes.

  4. Let them cool a bit and serve with dipping sauce of choice (BBQ, ketchup, honey mustard, ranch and so on).

Notes

  • You can also use pre-cut chicken tenders or cube breasts yourself.
  • Arrowroot powder will also work in place of cornstarch.
  • The best and crispiest version of these will be made in an air fryer, but the oven is great too for a softer exterior.
  • Cayenne pepper has spice to it; if you are sensitive to heat or making for children, please skip this spice.
  • Avocado oil will also work.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days or you can freeze for up to two months. Defrost before heating up in the air fryer or oven.
